How Dual Language Programs Work

In a two-way dual language program, approximately half the students are native English speakers and half are native speakers of the second language (usually Spanish). Students learn academic content in both languages simultaneously.

50/50 Model

Half of each school day is taught in English, half in the second language. Used across all grade levels.

Best for: Older students, later entry (Grade 3+)

90/10 Model

In early grades, 90% of instruction is in the target language. English gradually increases to 50/50 by 4th grade.

Best for: Early entry (PK3/PK4/K) — the most effective immersion model

⚠️ Key Insight: Apply at PK3

Dual language PK3 spots are often less competitive than kindergarten slots because many families wait until K to apply. If a dual language program is your goal, applying at PK3 is your best strategic entry point — and the earlier the immersion starts, the better the language outcomes.
