How to Register for a DC School
DC school registration goes through the MySchoolDC unified lottery — one application for DCPS and charter schools. Here's exactly how to do it.
Apply on MySchoolDC →Registration Steps
Research Schools First
Before applying, browse all DC schools on DC Parents School Guide. Filter by ward, grade, program type, and match rate. Attend open houses at your top choices between November and February.
Create a MySchoolDC Account
Go to apply.myschooldc.dc.gov and create an account. You'll need an email address and a DC home address. Do this early — the application window opens in January.
https://apply.myschooldc.dc.gov →Add Your Child's Information
Enter your child's full name, date of birth, and current school (if applicable). Make sure the date of birth is correct — it determines grade level eligibility.
Build Your Ranked List
You can list up to 12 schools in order of preference. Put your true first choice at #1. The lottery algorithm never penalizes you for this. Use your DC Parents School Guide list as your reference.
Submit by Mid-February
The deadline is firm — there are no exceptions. Submit at least a week early. You'll receive a confirmation email. Save it.
Review Your Match in March
Log into MySchoolDC in late March to see your results. If matched, you'll have about two weeks to accept. If waitlisted, stay on the list — waitlists move significantly.
